network-marketing-hypeIf you’ve been involved in network marketing or a home based business for any length of time, you’ve been exposed to the hype-machine! You know what I mean…”Get started today and you’ll be making $10,000 per month in 30 days working from the beach!” and “Get your system set-up in 10 minutes and you’ll wake up to multiple PayPal payments tomorrow!”.  This marketing is SOOOOO over the top that it shouldn’t even work but it’s this misleading type of advertising that’s the cause for much of the “failure” we see in network marketing.

Failure really means “quitting” when it comes to the home based business industry because that’s really the only way you can fail. But I think that the prevailing  marketing strategy of “easy money” attracts lazy and unmotivated  people to our industry who will be quick to quit when they realize that it takes work.

Could you imagine if you were looking to start a Subway Franchise (which requires about  $200K to start btw) and Subway’s sales pitch was “Start a Subway Franchise Today and Earn $1,000,000 This Year!”. They’d be in court tomorrow and then out of business. They don’t even have sales projections on their franchise sales site.

Starting a home based business is so attractive because the start-up cost, compared to starting a franchise or other type of brick and mortar business, is nominal. You’re talking anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. Then, you’re responsible for advertising your home business in order to make sales. Most never learn how to advertise and market their business. Without a proven system you can use to generate leads, you’re left to having to figure everything out yourself, which can be a recipe for disaster. This is another reason for frustration and people walking away. But, it should really be obvious that you need to generate “sales” in order to build a successful business.

Understand that network marketing is a legitimate business that provides us all with the opportunity to reach financial successes that would be unattainable otherwise. But, also understand that it takes work and that you are Starting a Home Based Business with the operative word being “BUSINESS”.
