I’ve seen 5 different TV commercials over the past week, by network marketing companies, looking to recruit new distributors. Also, Herbalife is a sponsor of Network Marketing is moving to mainstream America and getting more aggressive, because these companies know that there has never been a better time to recruit in our industry’s history.

The Commercials
1. Amway – no surprise that this “big-pockets” company is on the list
2. Avon – another old-school MLM
3. Unknown – a company advertising how you can make $15K per month working from home
4. Infomercial – a guy selling his “online marketing” ebook.
5. P90X – we’ve all seen Beachbody’s P90x infomercial!

In addition, there are numerous MLMs marketing using sports and sponsorships such as Herbalife, Xango, MonaVie, and many others.

If you’re one of those people who are “embarrassed” about being involved in network marketing, or you cover your mouth when someone asks you what you do, you can officially stop now! There has never been a better time to be involved in an industry that allows literally anyone to go into business for themselves for a very low start up cost. And none that I can think of that affords those people the opportunity to earn whatever income they desire and live a freedom-based lifestyle of a successful entrepreneur.

I’m on the tail end of the baby-boomer generation, having  been born in 1964. Our current economy has really taken on everyone, but particularly on baby boomers. We are at an age that, unless we had a very specific set of skills – my career was always general sales and management – it is very difficult for us to get hired as people in our 40s, 50s & 60s. AND, if we can get hired it’s at a pay rate that is much lower than what we were used to making and might not even cover our living expenses (especially if we have kids). So, what is a baby-boomer to do?

I  think you know where I’m going with this. The home based business industry has never been hotter. Network marketing offers everyone an opportunity to get started and to run a business for a much lower cost than if you decided to start a brick and mortar business. MUCH LESS! And, it offers a  truly  lucrative opportunity for the driven entrepreneur.

When my mortgage business collapsed on me, I was  forced to do something else. This is a true story…I was looking online for sales jobs where I figured that I could take my mortgage sales experience and be successful. I found a position online that looked appealing from the ad and when I got a call for an interview I  was told  that the position was selling Deer Urine to hunting shops around NY.  WHAT?? My apologies to all of the Deer Urine salespeople  but I was not going to do that! That’s really what made me realize that I had better take  control of my own future.

The great thing too is that baby boomers can use almost all of their past experiences to help them succeed while re-inventing themselves as a network marketer. And, you don’t need to worry about needing to contact your family and friends because I have never done that. Of course, if you do that can really get you off to a fast start but learning how to market your business – whether it’s online of off – is essential.  I see many people who NEED to make money and WANT to make money but they are not willing to put in the time to MARKET THEIR BUSINESS. Think about it this way…

You open a restaurant in your basement that serves the absolute BEST pizza anywhere in the world. You get the best cheeses shipped in from Italy & the sauce is your grandmother’s secret recipe. BUT, you don’t tell anybody. How many people will get to taste this amazing new culinary work of art? The simple answer is NOBODY. You will need to advertise your business to let people know about it.

The same goes for your network marketing business. You can have the greatest  product, most  amazing marketing system, and the most lucrative compensation plan in the entire universe. People will find that business but they will not join you because they won’t even know that you are in it. I know this sounds OBVIOUS but you’d be surprised.

The skill-sets of baby boomers are a perfect match for network marketing. If you are someone who is out of work or looking to re-invent their career to be able to take control of your own financial future, I recommend that you seriously consider starting your own home-based business.

So…You Want To Start A Home-Based Business, Huh?

Why do we get involved in this crazy business of Network Marketing…also commonly referred to as Direct Sales or MLM (Multi Level Marketing)? The answer is simple…because we want to have complete control of our lives! Both personally and financially. We would rather do what we want when we want to rather than be tied to a desk or office every day. We’d rather be with our families spending quality time together. It’s easy and inexpensive to start a network marketing business so why not, right? There’s a ton of MLM businesses telling you how you can make a ridiculous amount of money and you only have to work 10 minutes a day. Wow!

The idea of starting a network marketing business is great but, unfortunately most people who get involved don’t make any money. There’s a 95-97% failure rate, according to industry statistics. This helps to give the industry a bad name. People who fail blame their lack of success on the company they join…they call the industry or their company a “scam”…and they quit. And then the tell their friends about their bad experience.

The truth of the matter is that network marketing is a legitimate business (not all businesses in network marketing are legitimate so you do need to do your due diligence) currently endorsed by such giants of industry as Donald Trump and Warren Buffet among others. It’s a business where the “average” person can create massive wealth in a relatively short period of time and become self-employed without incurring all of the start-up costs associated with starting a business such as a franchise, restaurant, bar, etc.

Network Marketing, as we know it today, has changed. The days of bugging people in shopping malls, putting fliers on cars, annoying your friends and family, and going to rah-rah meetings in hotel conference rooms are gone, thankfully. People are not born with an innate knowledge of website optimization, generating free leads from Google, how to run an effective Pay Per Click campaign, how to build an opt-in list, etc. In fact, you probably wouldn’t even know what these terms mean if you are not already doing internet marketing! Our kids’ kids may be born with this knowledge but we weren’t!

You also have to be ready to work. Yup…I said a bad 4 letter word! Both in acquiring knowledge and in marketing your business. You need to learn how to market effectively and then you need to apply your knowledge. The idea of making gads of money with no effort “on auto-pilot” in just a few minutes a day is a myth. The idea of making money without recruiting (just from spillover in matrix programs) is also hogwash. At some point, your business can virtually be put on auto-pilot but not when you are starting out and don’t have a proven system in place.

You will need to recruit other network marketers into your business consistently by generating a daily flow of home based business leads…and you will need to work to keep them motivated and help to ensure their success so they remain in your business. You also need to ensure that they are using the same system you are to ensure duplicatable results. This is the challenge.

Why Is The Network Marketing Failure Rate So High?

I got to thinking about this yesterday and thought I’d write a quick post about my opinion of why the network marketing failure rate is so high and causes so many people to quit. In my humble opinion, network marketing offers tremendous opportunity for wealth creation for the average person. The entry fee to start your online business is inexpensive and the upside is great. The low entry fee is why many people who do not have the entrepreneurial drive get involved. They are suckered in by claims by companies of making gobs of money while the marketer is either sleeping or on the beach.

To succeed online, it takes work. To most people, this is a 4-letter word George Carlin should have included in his skit from years ago (those of you my age will know what I’m talking about)! To give you an example, I received an email from one of my downline members recently who had received an email from his downline member. His downline member was wondering if the program she had joined was really going to work because she hadn’t gotten any sign-ups in her 1 day of marketing! She was thinking that the program might be a scam! This, unfortunately, is the mindset of the majority of “network marketers” and contributes greatly to the 97% failure rate and high attrition rates that we always hear about. This failure rate is the same with people starting off-line businesses as well.

Most people are just not cut out to run their own business. It’s not in their make-up and that’s OK. But, this makes the failure rate arbitrarily high. I have no way of proving this but the failure rate of people who actually apply themselves and have a success-oriented mindset is much lower than 97%. Probably lower than 50%.

Another contributing factor is “The grass is always greener on the other side”. This statement is rarely true. I’ve learned this the hard-way throughout the years in my offline business life. The key is to find a business opportunity, or a few, that you believe in and that are legitimate, and work those programs. If you don’t know how to market, learn. That’s what I’m doing with MyLeadSystemPro. I have been in sales and marketing for my entire 20 plus year career and had done some internet marketing but nothing like this. Online network marketing is dynamic and we all need to learn as much as we can and apply what we learn in our marketing efforts, even if it’s not perfect. This applies to any business: If you educate yourself consistently, you will know more than 95% of your competition. Most people are either overwhelmed or too lazy (sorry) to apply themselves.

Then, it is the sponsor’s job to relay this information onto their members. I have been involved in a few business opportunities where I never hear from my sponsor. Even when I reached out to them! I don’t think they’d answer the door if I showed up at their house and knocked! These people will never be successful. No matter what your experience level, you need to educate, mentor, and motivate your downline. Sometimes this can be difficult because they are not receptive but you still need to do it. This will come back to you ten-fold because your message will resonate with some.

Basically, it is my opinion that the network marketing failure rate is inflated by the people who shouldn’t be in the business to begin with. With a negative mindset, there is no way to be successful. Without seeking out and following a proven system, it will take a long time to realize some success and it might be too long. For those who are giving real effort, and consistently educating themselves, I assure you that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Do not give up because this is a great business with plenty of room for everyone who wants to…to succeed. And create the lifestyle that they’ve always dreamed of.

In my quest to find the Top 10 Best Home Based Business opportunities online, I have been looking very seriously at YourNetBiz. I want to preface this article by saying that I am not nor have I ever been a member of YourNetBiz so I am not trying to sell you on this business opportunity. This completely unbiased review will contain my findings that I’ve discovered through my due diligence and a determination of whether or not this online business meets my criteria of being one of the 10 best home based business programs for the online marketing entrepreneur.

YourNetBiz falls into the category of high-end direct sales businesses. This is not an MLM (multi-level-marketing). The entry cost for membership of their Platinum product suite, which is their most popular membership level, is $2,995 plus $59.95 per month. You’ve probably heard the term G.P.T. (Get Paid Today). YourNetBiz falls into that category as you can begin earning substantial commissions immediately rather than waiting to grow a team of 1000s as you would in a traditional MLM business.

Longevity: The average lifespan of an online business opportunity is less than 6 months. Most of the compensation models are not sustainable business models. Plus the owners of the program just keep starting new programs and trying to capitalize on the hype of a program launch. YourNetBiz has been in business since 2007, beginning life as MyInternetBusiness. This is an eternity online and indicates that the owner of the program is running it as a business and not a get rich quick scheme.

Owner: The owner of YourNetBiz is Rob Hannley. Rob has a very good reputation online and amongst the membership. He’s very involved in the business, transparent, and listens to the membership’s recommendations on improving the program. This is almost unheard of. I have been in businesses where I didn’t even know who the owners were (I’m not proud of this)! The recent addition of a new product also shows me that the company is not standing still and is continuing to grow and ad value for the members.

Compensation: As I mentioned earlier, YourNetBiz is a direct sales or G.P.T. business. You make commission from your direct sales and an override from the sales of your direct referrals. One-Level deep to compare with traditional MLM. This is the compensation plan you want if you are looking to make substantial money quickly online. A G.P.T. program is the only way to make six-figures online in your first year. Using the Platinum membership as an example, you make $2000 on every $2,995 sale. You will then make $500 on every sale that your direct referral makes. $495 goes to the company. You can see how you can earn substantial commissions, particularly if you build a strong team.

Summary: It is my feeling that YourNetBiz definitely meets the criteria to be considered a “10 Best Home Based Business”. This type of business attracts serious marketers. People who are looking to earn a substantial income online. They are also typically more experienced business people and marketers. The competition can be stiff. For this reason, you really need to know how to market online effectively and have a proven system in place to ensure your success. It is considered better to look for businesses that have been around for at least 2 years, but it can also be financially rewarding to get into a new company early.
